In a contentious tele-town hall, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) sharply criticized the Biden administration for providing military aid to Israel amidst its conflict with Hamas in Gaza, alleging it contributes to “gross human rights violations.”
Echoing a constituent’s sentiment, she questioned the U.S. policy of funding Israel while suggesting redirecting aid to Gaza.
Central to Ocasio-Cortez’s argument was the Leahy Law, which prohibits U.S. military assistance to foreign military units implicated in severe human rights abuses.
She emphatically stated, “Forces that are recipients of U.S. military aid cannot be engaging in gross human rights violations,” and added, “What we are witnessing is the gross violation of human rights in Gaza, and that is being done with U.S. military assistance.”
The congresswoman also urged pro-Palestinian activists to maintain pressure on Democratic lawmakers for a cease-fire.
Highlighting the power of constituent engagement, she remarked, “I want to also be clear about how powerful that is, constituent engagement.”
This approach appears to be resonating beyond the progressive wing within the Democratic Party, as she noted, “We have seen representatives from swing seats, that just barely won their seats, are now starting to come out in favor of a cease-fire.”
However, this activism has escalated beyond peaceful advocacy.
Rep. Daniel Goldman’s (D-N.Y.) office was vandalized with pro-Palestinian messaging, and a demonstration at the DNC headquarters was likened to the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, reflecting the growing tensions and security concerns.

Ocasio-Cortez’s stance, while finding support among a certain segment, is increasingly seen as out of touch with mainstream American sentiment and anti-Semitic.
Her comments and the ensuing activism are creating a rift within the Democratic Party, risking the political influence and appeal of Ocasio-Cortez and her “Squad.”
This divergence from mainstream views suggests a looming decrease in their political power as the public sees them for who they really are and as the general American public holds a notably different views on the issue.
