In an unexpected partnership, Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) teamed up with Republican Representative Matt Gaetz (FL) to introduce legislation aimed at prohibiting members of Congress from trading stocks.
The bill, H.R. 3003, would ban congressional members, their spouses, and dependents from owning or trading stocks. Gaetz disclosed that members of Congress traded $788 million worth of securities in the last year alone.
Despite their differing political views, Gaetz praised Ocasio-Cortez for her integrity, stating, “I will work with anyone and everyone to ensure that Congress is not so compromised.”
The legislation is also sponsored by Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL).
This collaboration marks a significant act of defiance from Ocasio-Cortez against House Democratic leadership.

She has previously clashed with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) over the issue of stock trading.
Although Pelosi initially opposed a ban on stock trading for members and their families, she later expressed support for such legislation.
Critics accused Pelosi and the Democratic leadership of undermining the effort by introducing a doomed bill last year.
Pelosi has faced bipartisan criticism for her husband’s stock trading activities during her time in office.
Earlier this year, her husband sold up to $3 million in Google stocks just before the Department of Justice initiated an antitrust investigation into the company.
In 2022, Pelosi oversaw the passing of a bill that benefited a tech company in which her husband had recently purchased stock.
Despite their occasional hostilities, Gaetz and Ocasio-Cortez found common ground on this issue.
The alliance is particularly striking given the past animosity between the two, with Ocasio-Cortez once referring to Gaetz as a “bad haircut in a cheap suit.”
Ocasio-Cortez further defied Pelosi this week by calling for Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to resign.
At 89 years old and absent from Congress for weeks due to shingles, Feinstein’s absence on the Judiciary Committee has hindered President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees, according to Ocasio-Cortez, who stated that Feinstein’s absence “is causing great harm.”
Pelosi has staunchly defended Feinstein against calls for her resignation, even suggesting that such demands are sexist. Feinstein expressed hope on Monday that she would return to her job next week.
