Nordstrom has announced plans to close both of its downtown San Francisco stores, including its Westfield Mall location and a nearby Nordstrom Rack.

The company confirmed the closures on Tuesday, citing a dramatic change in the downtown San Francisco market, which has impacted customer foot traffic and hindered successful operations.

The closures will affect about 357,500 square feet of retail space.

The Westfield mall Nordstrom is slated to close at the end of August, while the Nordstrom Rack is set to close on July 1.

In a statement, Westfield mall owner Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in downtown San Francisco, highlighting the exodus of retailers and businesses due to unsafe conditions for customers, retailers, and employees.

These ongoing issues are impeding the area’s economic recovery.

The announcement of Nordstrom’s downtown departure follows the closure of a nearby Whole Foods flagship store less than a month ago.

The company cited staff safety concerns and deteriorating conditions in the area as the reason for the closure.

Since 2020, a total of 20 retailers have closed stores or announced closures in the Union Square area, an increase from 17 just a week ago.
