Alabama Governor Kay Ivey took to Twitter to “correct” ESPN’s choice of words regarding her new legislation that aims to prevent biological men from participating in women’s sports at colleges.
In their original report, ESPN stated that “Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed legislation on Tuesday that will ban transgender women from playing on female sports teams in college.”
Governor Ivey promptly responded to the sports outlet, stating, “Let me fix that, @espn.”
The governor then changed the wording from “transgender women” to “biological men.” She made her position clear by tweeting, “Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed legislation on Tuesday that will ban biological MEN from playing on FEMALE sports teams in college.”
On Tuesday, Governor Ivey signed a law that prohibits biological males from competing on female sports teams at Alabama colleges. This follows her previous action in 2021 to prohibit biological boys from participating in girls’ sports in K-12 schools.
In a statement after signing the bill into law, Governor Ivey explained her rationale, saying, “Look, if you are a biological male, you are not going to be competing in women’s and girls’ sports in Alabama. It’s about fairness, plain and simple.”
It is worth noting that Alabama is not alone in enacting such legislation. Currently, 20 other states have implemented restrictions on biological men participating in women’s sports.
