Apparently there are not enough terms to describe sexual gender these days and it seems to be frustrating some people. Take UK freelance journalist Emma Flint who is clearly disturbed that ‘abrosexual’ is not more commonly used as it how she identifies.
Flint penned an op-ed for Metro’s “Platform” section introducing the term “abrosexual,” She candidly shared, “For those of you who don’t know what abrosexuality is, in layperson’s terms, it simply means when someone’s sexual identity fluctuates and changes.”
Flint recounts her late discovery of the term at the age of 30, lamenting, “When I was growing up, I’d never heard the term abrosexual – you were either straight, gay, or lesbian as far as nineties society was concerned. Anything else was made up.”
Flint’s revelation in 2020 is not just personal but she actually rebukes readers of societal ignorance. She states that when she discloses her abrosexual identity, “I’m often greeted by a blank expression, followed by a question of what the term means.”
The term, “abrosexual” made its appearance as early as 2013 and it spread on social media in 2016.
“When I was growing up, I’d never heard the term abrosexual – you were either straight, gay, or lesbian as far as nineties society was concerned. Anything else was made up,” she wrote. “Of course, we know that’s far from the truth – but societal blindspots mean we learn terms much slower than if they’re readily accessible.”
Flint continued her rebuke stating, “When I tell people that I’m abrosexual, I’m often greeted by a blank expression, followed by a question of what the term means. And questions are fine, as long as they’re respectful. I’m not expecting everyone to know what it means – hell, I didn’t until two years ago – but you should always listen with respect.”
However, Flint is optimistic, expressing a hope that “abrosexuality will be seen as normal, just another identity that someone might have, and not regarded as a way to be ‘on trend’, as some of the hurtful comments I’ve received suggest.”
She argues for acceptance through education and open-mindedness.
According to The Telegraph, the UK education system is well under way with Flint’s philosophy, highlighting the extremes of gender identity exploration in UK schools, allowing for “neo-genders” where students are allowed to identify as non-human entities.
“Students in schools across Britain have been allowed to identify as dinosaurs, horses and moons, amid warnings that teachers should address such incidents as a safeguarding issue,” The Telegraph reported.
Flint’s personal journey and the broader societal trends outlined by The Telegraph paint a disturbing picture. Society is confusing gender with sexual preference, non-human species and even fictional characters.
The idea that formal education is now required for people to understand the plethora of gender identities and there is shaming associated with not knowing a gender beyond biologically born male and female human is disturbing. Insisting that children be taught to deny reality and let imagination dictate the norm with huge amounts of societal pressure to define how they identify is abuse.
