In a tragic turn of events in Texas, a young athlete, Angel Hernandez, lost his life moments after achieving a personal best in a 5K run.

The 16-year-old, a sophomore at Chisholm Trail High School, had just finished his race at a district track meet in Haltom City, Tarrant County, on Oct. 13 when he suddenly collapsed.

Onlookers, including his friends, tried to help him, but the severity of the situation was soon apparent.

He was taken to a local hospital where, sadly, he passed away an hour later.

Brent Brevard, who had coached Hernandez, remembered him fondly.

Speaking to KHOU, he said, “He worked hard and cared about his teammates.”

Brevard highlighted Hernandez’s commitment to his sport and studies, adding, “He also acted right in school and took care of his grades.”

Brevard’s words echoed the shock felt by many: “He’s such a great kid, a likable kid, a good student, and it was awful news.”

The reason behind Hernandez’s sudden collapse remains a mystery, leaving his friends and family searching for answers.

His funeral took place on Friday, and as a tribute to his achievements, he was given a varsity letter jacket posthumously.

That evening, a touching moment of silence was observed during the high school’s homecoming football game in his honor.

Beyond track events, Hernandez had a deep passion for martial arts and competed in tournaments across the nation.

His karate coach, Ashley Wood, spoke to KHOU about her memories of the young athlete.

“He made you love him with his personality,” she shared, recalling his captivating smile.

To help the family during this challenging time, Wood started a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the funeral costs.

She expressed the community’s collective sentiment, saying, “It’s really hard. We’ll never get over it. We’ll never forget him. He’s going to be missed here, but he’s going to be loved always.”

Left to mourn Hernandez’s sudden and tragic passing are his parents, Antonio and Elsie Hernandez, and his younger brother, Mark Hernandez.
