Although the poster boy of Democrat leaders is always unaccountable, Andrew Cuomo is not alone. Instead, he’s the latest link in a Democratic chain.
Democrats’ refusal to hold their leaders accountable creates a “moral hazard” for the party, insulates their leaders from failures, and encourages more of the same poor behavior.
The Department of Justice is investigating Andrew Cuomo for falsely testifying to Congress regarding his actions as New York governor during the Covid pandemic. Specifically, the DOJ is examining Cuomo’s explanation to the House of Representatives’ Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic about his role in issuing a directive, the July 6 Report, that prohibited nursing homes from denying admittance to Covid-positive patients. Later, he tried to revise reported nursing home deaths.
Select Subcommittee Says Cuomo Lied
Regarding Cuomo’s testimony, the Select Subcommittee’s report states: “Mr. Cuomo’s testimony is directly contradicted by documents and other witness testimony.”
Regarding a report that sought to lower New York’s total nursing home death count, the Select Subcommittee report states: “In response to questions related to the Executive Chamber’s decision to remove out-of-facility deaths from the July 6 Report, Mr. Cuomo remarked ‘[w]ho cares?’”
Finally, the Select Subcommittee report included a finding: “Mr. Andrew Cuomo Acted in a Manner Consistent with an Attempt to Inappropriately Influence the Testimony of a Witness and Obstruct the Select Subcommittee’s Investigation.”
Democrats Overlook Cuomo’s Crimes
This hardly exhausts Cuomo’s list of investigation-worthy items. His order to place Covid-positive patients (the sick) into New York nursing homes (the most vulnerable) made the death toll revisions necessary in the first place. This was likely among the most egregious decisions during Covid — possibly the deadliest by mortality rate. Of course, he wanted to reduce the reported number of deaths that resulted.
Not to mention, the DOJ determined in 2024 that Cuomo sexually harassed 13 women. In 2021, New York State Attorney General Letitia James also found Cuomo had sexually harassed women, violating state and federal laws. When facing mounting impeachment efforts, Cuomo resigned as governor.
Despite these past actions and allegations, Cuomo is running for New York City mayor. In many instances, such a checkered past would be enough to preemptively disqualify a candidate. Not Cuomo because he’s in the Democrat Party. Relying on a far-left strategy, Cuomo holds substantial leads in most Democrat primary mayoral polls.
Democrats Never Hold Leaders Accountable
Although an egregious example, Cuomo is not a solitary one: Democrat party supporters never hold party leaders accountable.
Hillary Clinton is a classic example. Forget the Whitewater scandal and the others that it spun off; Hillary’s Clinton Care debacle would seemingly have been sufficient for Democrats to assign her to their perpetual doghouse.
This fiasco helped win Republican majorities for the first time in four decades. Republicans have been congressionally competitive ever since. Nonetheless, Hillary carpetbagged to New York, won a Senate seat, then parlayed this into being Secretary of State and finally Democrats’ presidential nominee.
Joe Biden also benefited from Democrats’ refusal to hold leaders accountable. As a Senate nonentity for almost four decades, he replicated that feat as vice president for two terms.
Obama passed over him and endorsed Hillary to be the party’s nominee in 2016. Biden nearly washed out in 2020, just as he had in 1988 and 2008, before finally becoming Democrats’ nominee by default, not demand. Over four years, he accumulated abysmal approval ratings. Still, Democrats stuck with him, refusing to push him aside until his dreadful debate performance revealed the cover-up of his incapacity.
The Trend Continues Throughout Democratic Political History
Nancy Pelosi is another example. Pelosi lost the House of Representatives for Democrats in 2022 and then the position of being Democrats’ House leader. Holding no party position, she still stuck around, and Democrats listened to her — enough that she forced Biden from office and Kamala Harris into the nomination. All for naught: Trump not only won, but did so by his strongest showing yet, leaving the Democrat Party in tattered disarray. All this notwithstanding, Democrats still listen to Pelosi.
Kamala Harris too benefits from Democrats overlooking egregious errors. A terrible presidential candidate in 2020 and 2024, she was a dismally bad vice president. Before that, she was a nondescript senator. Today, Democrats talk of her again running for president or for governor of California.
Finally, there’s Bernie Sanders. A two-time loser for the party’s nomination — despite him not being a Democrat. No one is more responsible for unleashing the radicalism that’s killing their party, but Democrats’ hearts still flutter over him.
The Cycle Never Ends
Democrats refuse to hold their own leaders accountable. This applies not only to objective failures but to subjective choices that affect their party.
Of course, Democrats’ have few presentable leaders from which to choose. More importantly, Democrats don’t view their leaders’ policy fiascos as failures because they support these failed policies.
Democrats’ blind sightedness is a boon to the leaders, but a bane to the party. It creates a moral hazard, emboldening their leaders to make bad decisions and pursue worse polices again and again. In turn, the “moral hazard” has created a “political hazard” that repulses voters in all but the bluest areas.
