A section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia reportedly collapsed on Sunday after a tanker truck burst into flames, according to officials.

“Today’s going to be a long day. Obviously, with [I-95] northbound gone and southbound questionable, it’s going to be even longer,” Dominick Mireles of the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management, told local media outlets on Sunday.

“It’s heavy construction equipment that’s going to be required to come in to search and remove that debris,” Mireles told reporters.

And, according to Philadelphia Managing Director Tumar Alexander, “I-95 will be impacted for a long time, for a long time.”

Derek Bowmer, battalion chief for the Philadelphia Fire Department, told CNN that the northbound side of I-95, a major interstate that spans across the East Coast, collapsed. “We did have a collapse of 95 on the northbound side, and the southbound side is compromised by heavy fire,” he added. “It looked like we had a lot of heat and heavy fire underneath the underpass.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he is urging all residents to avoid I-95 in northeastern Philadelphia as officials attempt to respond to the collapsed bridge. Real-time traffic data as of Sunday morning shows that the highway was shut down in both directions.

“I was just briefed by @PEMAHQ, @PennDOTNews, and @PAStatePolice on the I-95 fire and collapse in Philadelphia,” he wrote. “State Police and PEMA are on the scene assisting local first responders, and @PennDOTSec and his team are en route to assess the situation and address traffic needs.”

The city’s emergency management office wrote that all lanes were “shut down in both directions” in the vicinity of the fire.

Local media reported that the fire broke out on Cottman Ave., located underneath the I-95 overpass, at around 6 a.m. local time. It’s not clear what was inside the tanker truck or why it caught on fire.

It’s not clear if there were any injuries.
