Two fugitives charged with murder and attempted murder in separate cases in Riverside County, California, were arrested in Mexico and extradited to the United States, authorities announced Feb. 15.

Lorenzo Castellanos, 72, a Mexican citizen, was arrested in Mexico by the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

The DA’s Office said it extradited Castellanos to the county to face trial.

He is charged with murder and child endangerment for a crime that was committed in Rubidoux in January 2001. He allegedly stabbed his girlfriend, with whom he has a child, numerous times and killed her, according to the DA’s Office.

In another case, Jose Barron, 56, a Mexican citizen, was also arrested in Mexico and extradited, according to the office.

Barron is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, and aggravated mayhem for a crime committed in Riverside in September 2014. The victim in this case was attacked with a machete and received substantial injuries, according to the office.

Barron and Castellanos were held in Mexico City and transported to Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

Barron was arraigned Feb. 10, while Castellanos’s arraignment has been scheduled for Feb. 24, both in Riverside County Superior Court.

A spokesperson from the Riverside District Attorney’s Office was not immediately available for comment.
