This week’s cover
How we saw the world
This week we published our Christmas double issue. The festive scene on our cover gives a nod to some of the fare inside. We have articles on women DIY-ers, wine in an era of climate change and the politicisation of two male penguins who hatched an egg together, to pick just a few. Our principal leader, meanwhile, focuses on one of the most pressing issues facing the rich world today: migration. The movement of people around the world is under increasing threat from hardline policies and nativist politicians who feverishly warn of an “invasion”. We argue that the fear and hysteria which have consumed debates around migration are misplaced and obscure the overwhelming benefits which migrants offer. Rather than clamping down on immigration, governments should seek to build a more mobile planet. The prize is a wealthier world.
