In an unexpected twist of events, former President Trump finds himself in a position to turn the tables on his adversaries. The latest act of vengeance-driven wrath from his persecutors inadvertently presented him with a unique opportunity.

On a recent Monday, a grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia indicted Trump and 18 others on charges related to the 2020 presidential election.

The defendants have been given until August 25 to surrender. Coincidentally, the first Republican presidential debate is scheduled for August 23, set to be broadcast by Fox News from Milwaukee.

Trump, however, expressed his disinclination to participate in the debate. He refused to sign the required pledge to support the eventual GOP primary winner. Considering his significant lead in the polls, he doesn’t seem to have much incentive to attend, but this is where the plot thickens.

Ed O’Keefe, CBS News senior White House and political correspondent, pointed out a potential strategy for Trump during a segment on “CBS Mornings.”

He suggested Trump could overshadow his competitors by choosing to surrender on the day of the debate, August 23.

As O’Keefe put it, “Where would you rather be that day, in Milwaukee with everybody else or in that Atlanta courtroom? He knows that this has completely sucked oxygen away from everybody else running.”

This theory holds water, but not necessarily for the reasons O’Keefe implied.

If Trump decides to surrender in Georgia on the day of the debate, it wouldn’t be to divert attention from other Republican presidential candidates. After all, the latest Real Clear Politics average of polls shows the former president with a nearly 40-point lead over his closest challenger.

Instead, Trump has two compelling reasons for choosing August 23 as his surrender date. Firstly, he harbors nothing but disdain for the executives at Fox News. If he can undermine the network by drawing viewers away from the Republican debate, he certainly will.

Secondly, and more importantly, he should make his appearance in Georgia on August 23 for the sake of posterity.

Future generations, unclouded by current passions, will marvel at the contrast between the two events. One event, the debate, exists to promote political discourse, while the other, his arraignment, seeks to suppress it.

Regardless of the day Trump chooses to surrender, it will mark his fourth arraignment since March 30.
