Russia’s invasion of Ukraine started in February of last year. Combat has mainly been taking place in the east of the country, in the pro-Russian separatist region of Donetsk and Donbas, as well as the south near Crimea.

Though, Russia still hasn’t achieved its objective and is getting desperate, recently launching a massive drone strike on the Ukrainian port city of Odessa.

The latest attack hit one of the largest ports in Ukraine and will impact the country’s economy hard. The attack was by far the most powerful hit on Ukraine’s infrastructure since the beginning of the war.

A veritable swarm of drones and missiles invaded the skies, including the deployment of 16 caliber missiles, six Onyx hypersonic missiles, eight X-22s, one X-59, and about 32 Iranian ‘Geranium’ UAVs.

In addition to hitting the Odessa port itself, this blitz struck industrial zones near it, such as the oil depot at the railway station and a nearby military airfield. Gennady Trukhanov, the mayor of Odessa, said it was the worst attack on the city since the war started.

In an official statement, Russia’s Ministry of Defense praised the operation and said forces were successful in the raid.

The reason Russia did this is because they recently pulled out of a grain deal that allowed Ukrainian wheat and grains to be shipped across the Black Sea and reach world markets.

Russia was doing this in return for being allowed to still export some of their grains.

Whereas now they pulled out of the deal a few days ago and are moving to reimpose their blockade on Ukrainian grains. They want to trap and starve the country from accessing the world’s markets.

The destruction of Ukraine’s ports is all about making Ukraine’s commercial maritime operations impossible and trying to force them into submission.
