It was a scene of absolute mayhem amid a demonstration against the filing of charges of terrorist acts.

These charges stand against over 20 individuals who were participating in violent demonstrations at a nearby law enforcement training center construction site. Protesters at the DeKalb County Jail in Georgia shattered windows and lit small fires as part of their violent protests.

After a counterproductive protest on Sunday at the planned training facility, which the protesters unofficially dubbed “Cop City,” 23 people have been charged with domestic terrorism as a result of the incident.

This infuriated the protesters. After booking all 23 of them into the DeKalb County Jail, a magistrate judge later decided to deny bail for 22 of them, as their acts were beyond terrible.

However, the judge did grant bail in the amount of $5,000 for Southern Poverty Law Center solicitor Thomas Webb Jurgens. He was detained while serving as a legal solicitor for the National Lawyers Guild at the time of his arrest.

During the violent demonstration that took place outside the jail on Wednesday night, some of the detainees within the jail shattered cell windows and tossed lighted things out, which resulted in a small fire starting on a rooftop ledge.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) contended the arrest of Jurgens was not proof of a crime, but rather evidence of “heavy-handed law enforcement action against protestors.”

Prior to the event that took place on Sunday, a total of 19 persons had previously been arrested on domestic terrorism charges. That was since last December for allegedly protesting and trying to hinder the construction of the police training facility.

Manuel Teran, a left-wing activist was shot to death by police on January 18 in the vicinity of the location of the law enforcement training center, is who sparked the demonstration that took place on Sunday.

Teran reportedly ignored the orders of law enforcement officers and shot his firearm when officers were attempting to evacuate a building, as reported by Atlanta News First.

The event has served as a focal point for ongoing demonstrations that are directed against police brutality, as well as the development of the police training facility itself.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s department did not provide an instant response to requests for comment about the demonstration that took place on Wednesday night.

The situation is still developing and it is also still unknown whether or not there will be any more demonstrations or arrests in the days to come.

In the end, the prison officials will have to do more to stop the eruption of violence in the future. The Dekalb County Sheriff will also have to be more proactive in dealing with situations like this.
