NextImg:"Partygate" Investigation Reopened After UK Police Find Government Officials Drinking, Mocking Lockdown Restrictions - The Conservative Brief

A parliamentarian committee found that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson lied about lockdown-breaching parties involving government officials.

Johnson was also involved in a prolonged campaign to intimidate investigators examining his hypocritical actions during the coronavirus pandemic.

The overall “partygate” scandal touches many of the United Kingdom’s political classes, from Parliamentarians to Johnson and current PM Rishi Sunak.

The Metropolitan Police initiated a new investigation into what was known as the ‘jingle and mingle’ event. This took place at the conservative headquarters as part of a Christmas soiree in December 2020.

Footage from the event showed MPs and bureaucrats mocking coronavirus restrictions. All the while, many Britons were unable to leave their homes, visit family, or attend funerals or church services.

The police force is also examining a gathering that allegedly took place in Parliament on December 8, 2020, involving House of Commons and House of Lords members.

Early in the year, Johnson and his wife, Carrie, were fined by the police for violating coronavirus regulations. Their violations in question happened during a birthday celebration for Johnson at his Downing Street residence and office in June 2020.

Police, however, have said they will not be opening an investigation into breaches made by Johnson and his wife in May and June 2020.

Further, revelations have surfaced of Friday happy hours, garden parties, and birthday celebrations. All of these events were being held by government members in 10 Downing Street or other state buildings, according to the parliamentarian committee.

The scandals that came from Partygate ended the political career of Boris Johnson, resigning in September.

Johnson dismissed the committee’s conclusions as nonsense. He then described the report as a “farce” to provide a basis for his opponents’ attempts to remove him from office.
