America’s first smart weapon is planned for release this December at a very high cost. It’s being released by a Colorado-based company named Biofire and will be 9mm in caliber.
These guns will only be useful to their owners, since they can only be unlocked through a digital fingerprint or facial sensor.
Since the 90s, the manufacture of smart weapons has raised controversy and there’s a reason for that.
On the one hand, some people defend the fact this type of weapon can bring more security and reduce cases of robberies with the use of stolen firearms and especially accidental shootings.
On the other hand, there are those who believe this is a way for the government to control and even prohibit the sale of firearms to people they don’t approve of.
Such a scenario would be a total cancellation of the Second Amendment.
The past attempts to put smart weapons on the market have been in vain. Activists don’t like these smart weapons because they hurt gun rights and called into question the functionality of smart models.
Price is also a serious factor. The price of the Biofire smart gun will be $1,499. This is a much higher price, compared to ordinary pistols which usually go for around $400 to $800 dollars.
Many ordinary users and even former gun buyers are quite skeptical of the new technology. Though Kai Kloepfer, founder of Biofire, said thousands of people have already bought smart guns in the online pre-sale.
He said the Smart Gun is safe and effective with two levels of unlocking. If it doesn’t recognize the owner’s fingerprints, it will readily use facial recognition as an alternate and vice versa.
Earlier this year, the smart gun crashed during a demonstration; although Kloepfer says all issues have been fixed and it’s working perfectly now.
