Sports teams and fans in Canada were shocked after 18-year-old Tyson Downs, who was both a junior lacrosse and hockey player, passed away. This robs the country of promising talent and his family of a beloved son.

Downs unexpectedly died Sunday morning, at the age of 18, at his family’s home in Owen Sound, Canada.

No reason for his death has been disclosed, Daily Caller reports. Downs was a star player for the Owen Sound North Stars lacrosse club and the KW Siskins hockey team.

Both clubs issued statements on his death, mourning his loss, and offering support to his family. In an Instagram post earlier this week, KW Siskins said it was saying goodbye to Downs.

The post described his passing as “sudden” without offering any further details.

The hockey team based in Waterloo characterized Downs as a great teammate, with an “infectious passion” and “unparalleled dedication” to the game. It vowed the 18-year-old start would “never be forgotten.”

In his season for KW Siskins, Downs scored 16 wins across 45 matches. Prior to his KW Siskins, he was a player for the Grey Bruce Highlanders, another Canadian junior hockey team that honored his legacy with a social media post.

The Owen Sound lacrosse club also lauded its star player, describing the 18-year-old as a vital part of their team.

The North Stars wrote on Facebook that it was announcing the news of Tyson Downs’ passing with “terrible heartache and sadness.” The club said further that the young talent would be “deeply missed” as he had a major role in the lacrosse team both off and on the floor.

During his games for the North Stars this summer, Downs, who played as a defenseman, scored 17 points in 13 games.

Rick Chapman, the assistant coach of the KW Siskins, told the Owen Sound Sun Times that he had a “special bond” with the young player that he couldn’t explain. Chapman emphasized that he had always thought Downs would be a great athlete, even “unreal.”
