According to Mark Zuckerberg, the establishment erred in suppressing doubt during the coronavirus pandemic, which was either true or disputable.
Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Meta, which is parent organization of Facebook and Instagram, made the remarks during an appearance on the “Lex Fridman Podcast.”
He explained the difficulties associated with detecting misleading information on social media.
Zuckerberg stated he considers misinformation a very complex problem because there are statements that are plainly untrue or that may be true, but not detrimental.
He inquired if someone would be censored for simply being incorrect and if their actions don’t have any negative consequences. There are numerous genuine problems and obstacles there.
Using COVID as an example, he went on to explain that earlier in the pandemic, when there were actual health implications, there was not enough time to evaluate a number of scientific assumptions thoroughly.
Zuckerberg added, regrettably, he has a high opinion of the type of establishment that, in retrospect, requested the censorship of a number of facts and statements which turned out to be more debatable or true.
It seriously undermines confidence.
Many on the right have criticized Zuckerberg for concealing the case of Hunter Biden’s laptop just before the presidential election of 2020.
Zuckerberg stated in an August 2022 interview with Joe Rogan that Facebook suppressed the story. That’s because the FBI previously issued a warning about the prospect of Russian falsehoods being released to harm the Biden campaign.
He clarified at the time that they simply believed if the FBI informed them they needed to be cautious about something, he would consider the warning.
Zuckerberg stated they limited the story’s reach because they believed it conformed to FBI-issued guidelines for Russian disinformation. He then stated he could not recall whether the FBI designated the Hunter Biden laptop story as misinformation.
