With the departure of Tucker Carlson in April, Fox News seems poised to follow a similar trajectory to its progressive media counterparts. Compared to the previous year, the network lost 58 percent of its primetime demo viewers and 41 percent of its total day demo viewers.
“Demo viewers” is the rating system based on how many 25-54 year-olds watch the actual media content; this is due to sponsors’ tendency to target that age percentile.
CNN, in comparison, witnessed a decline in viewership, with a decrease of 39 percent in primetime demo viewers and 36 percent in total day demo viewers.
Despite the 2024 presidential election being a year away, numerous scandals surrounding the Biden administration, the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, and deep state abuses of power, American cable news keeps shedding viewers.
Fox News lost over 1,078 million in viewership in total demo viewers, while CNN and MSNBC have taken even more brutal beatings at 411,000 and 730,000, respectively.
While Fox News can sustain a considerable drop and maintain its leading position, every loss for CNN has severe repercussions.
The network appears to be in a downward spiral, losing trust among its audience, and its anchors are being criticized for “lacking appeal and diversity.”
With the advent of streaming, cable television is deteriorating rapidly. In 2016, 70 percent of American households had a subscription service with cable. Now, in 2023, that number has dropped to under 40 percent.
Upon cutting the revenue supply, mainstream liberal news outlets lose the ability to produce leftist content that relies on such a system.
For years, CNN was dependent on carriage fees that were generated by cable bills. With the lack of needed subscriptions, progressive media, alongside Fox News, will face an uncertain future if they will even exist long term.
