West Virginia state Rep. Derrick Evans was arrested during the January 6 protests for simply complementing the Capitol Police and giving them a fist bump.
Evans would later be arrested and spend six months behind bars in federal prison after pleading guilty to felony civil disorder.
As of January 2023, he is officially running for the United States House of Representatives and even received an endorsement from Mike Lindell.
Evans was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, having been elected in 2020, but resigned three days after the events of January 6.
While Evans never wanted to run for federal office and pull his family into the spotlight of national politics, given how events unfolded post-January 6 with Biden’s unending crusade against “MAGA Republicans,” he decided to take his chances.
Evans lives within West Virginia’s 1st district, which is primarily GOP.
Much of the population, according to him, supports the border wall, election integrity, energy independence, and opposes the weaponization of the federal government against political opponents.
Rep. Carol Miller, who currently represents the 1st district, has been called out by Evans as being too accommodating to the left. Examples include allocating funds to Ukraine, backing the coronavirus vaccines, backing lockdown measures, and her recent vote to increase the debt ceiling.
Evans labeled himself a Freedom Caucus/TEA Party conservative, differentiating him from Miller, who he sees as more of the establishment brand.
Despite concerns about appealing to voters regarding the integrity of the 2020 election, Evans said he believes the GOP did manage to outvote the algorithm and can do it again.
Overall, Evans proclaimed his goal was to improve the state of the American constitutional republic for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
