Actor Dennis Quaid recently gave an interview to People Magazine, in which he credits his faith in God for saving him after he struggled with drug addiction.
The 69-year-old actor and musician suffered from addiction to cocaine throughout his career.
At the same time, he established himself as an infamous Hollywood figure through his roles in movies like Breaking Away, The Right Stuff, and Great Balls of Fire! Quaid says, at one point, everyone has a relationship with God whether they believe it or not.
According to People, Quaid recalled having a profound realization that he saw himself facing a bleak future of being dead, in jail, or losing everything he had.
This gravitating experience motivated him to change his path and seek a better life through Christianity, as he shared with the outlet.
Quaid found that his faith played a significant role in his recovery journey in 1990. He turned to reading the Bible and other religious texts as he worked his way back to sobriety.
“I am thankful for my continued existence and grateful to be alive every day,” Quaid told People. “Life itself is full of immense challenges and it’s important to enjoy and value every second you are alive.” he continued.
Born in Texas, Quaid was raised a Christian by his family. However, he deviated from his upbringing upon entering the music industry. As time went on, he later ended up becoming addicted to cocaine in the 1970s.
Quaid said during the interview that drugs provide a temporary sense of joy. However, teh downside is that they leave you dependent and enslaved to substances in the long run.
Upon developing a personal relationship with Jesus is when the absolute joy and peace of being alive came to fruition for Quaid. He is encouraging others to get to know God.
