Democrats running New York City are breaking new sanity barriers by imposing a de facto driving tax on residents and visitors alike. This comes after a proposal for the first measure of this kind received federal approval last Friday.
The Democratic administration of NYC is now prepared to slap a $23 levy, also called a “congestion charge,” on those seeking to drive in Manhattan’s most visited areas, Breitbart News reports.
The driving levy program targeting motorists who go about their regular business could be launched in the spring of 2024. That would literally bring the Big Apply into line with other leftist-run cities worldwide – such as London, Stockholm, and Singapore.
The news about the new driving tax was announced by NYC officials hours after they decided in favor of another oppressive measure: dictating pizzerias burning wood and coal must install new ovens in order to cut their carbon gas emissions by 75%.
According to The Associated Press, one of the several traffic tolling levies considered would see drivers pay up to $23 daily for the “privilege” of entering Manhattan south of 60th Street.
The measure is supposed to force people to abandon their cars and start walking and/or riding public transportation.
The exact sum of the driving tax is yet to be determined by NYC’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is in charge of implementing a “long-stalled plan” to reduce driving in Manhattan.
The implementation of the far-left program became possible after it was given the green light by the Federal Highway Administration. This development was jubilantly announced by a spokesperson for New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul.
A CNN report just revealed the administration of Biden is also heavily supporting the plan.
The plan to cut driving in Manhattan has been delayed for several years. It was adamantly opposed by New Jersey officials, as it would spike commuting costs for people going to NYC downtown by car.
Among the main factions opposing the measure have been taxi and car companies, whose services might be rendered unaffordable.
Other cities where governments are considering implementing the same measure – such as Los Angeles – are also seeing entire communities crying foul. It remains to be seen how far Democrats will manage to go in limiting Americans’ freedom of movement.
