Climate activist Greta Thunberg is now facing charges from the Swedish Prosecution Authority for an unruly protest she spearheaded back in June. She could be hit with financial sanctions or prison time of up to six months.
These charges originate from her participation in a June protest that allegedly transformed into a significant traffic upheaval in the Swedish city of Malmö. Malmö is Sweden’s third-largest city, behind the capital of Stockholm and Gothenburg.
According to Swedish authorities, the prosecutor filed charges against Thunberg, who was involved in a climate protest on June 19, 2023, for causing a major disruption of traffic in Malmö.
Swedish authorities noted that Thunberg refused to comply with law enforcement orders to disperse from the protest scene.
Curiously, the statement the prosecution authority released did not list Thunberg by name.
However, Annika Collin, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Authority, informed CNN that the person mentioned in the prosecution authority’s charges is actually Greta Thunberg.
The prosecutor’s statement noted that Thunberg engaged in an act of disobedience toward law enforcement, which was allegedly committed with intent.
According to Irma Kjellström, a spokesperson for the activist group Ta Tillbaka Framtiden (Reclaim the Future), Thunberg was among several young activists who were engaged in the demonstrations that sought to block oil tankers.
Thunberg, who is now 20, rose to fame on June 21, 2018. She went on Twitter, declaring that mankind had five years to end fossil fuel consumption, lest it wanted to face an extinction-level event.
From there, Thunberg began demonstrating outside the Swedish Parliament in an effort to pressure lawmakers into passing stronger bills to address climate change.
Thunberg quickly became an international sensation. She even received Nobel Peace Prize nominations in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 for her climate change advocacy.
Thunberg is largely viewed as one of the most vocal young adult advocates for leftist causes, such as radical environmentalism.
