In recent years, there’s been a growing trend of people embracing smart homes, as opposed to more traditional residences. Smart homes are often promoted as convenient and efficient ways to have a home that’s most in tune with you.
The rise of the smart home also comes as artificial intelligence continues to play more prominent roles in people’s everyday lives. However, as with anything else, there are drawbacks that people ought to be aware of as they determine whether or not smart homes are for them.
In a quite disturbing case, Amazon actually locked a man out of his smart home, due to false allegations of racism, according to the Daily Caller.
Louis Rossmann recently took to YouTube, revealing that Amazon eventually shut down his smart home, due to a delivery driver who alleged his smart home made racist remarks.
However, the problem is that Rossmann was not even at his residence during the time when the delivery driver claims he heard the aforementioned staetments.
The story gets even more murky, as it turns out the delivery driver had headphones in. With that in mind, it begs to question how the driver could have clearly heard anything around him.
Eventually, after Rossmann contacted Amazon, the company ended up restoring the operations of his smart home.
In a statement regarding this matter, Amazon said after an internal review, it figured out that Rossmann didn’t do anything wrong and hence turned everything back over to him.
Amazon then claimed it’s working on ways to prevent incidents like this from reemerging in the future. Nevertheless, the notion of anyone being locked out of their home by a corporation is scary enough on its face.
This story may very well be a sign that it’s more advisable than not to steer clear of smart homes.
