In recent years, political division has swelled to levels not seen in quite some time. Polls continue to show that more people are likely to view folks with opposing political viewpoints as the enemy.

When this happens, it can end friendships, cause tensions in the workplace, and even tear apart families. There have been multiple reports of some relatives distancing themselves from one another after someone voted in a way they didn’t like.

Even to this day, intrafamily political strife persists. According to the New York Post, one of the latest examples of this was revealed when a woman wrote into the Ask Amy column for some family advice.

A woman reaching out to Ask Amy noted that her daughter didn’t want her right-wing uncle to attend her wedding. The daughter is a political progressive and asked her mom to inform the uncle that he wasn’t welcome.

The mother relayed the message accordingly; though, an issue emerged when the uncle then failed to send a $1,000 gift that was expected as a wedding present. When the mother complained about this, Ask Amy gave her what many folks have called a reality check.

As noted by the advice columnist, when the daughter and mother decided that the right-wing uncle couldn’t be part of the wedding, they should have known any gifts from him were also off the table.

To add insult to injury, the uncle later received photographs of the celebration, which has been criticized as just rubbing salt in the wound.

When family estrangement happens, especially due to politics, people have to understand all the consequences that come along with it.

With tensions continuing to rise over political matters in this country, it’s unfortunately probable that more relatives will find themselves excluded if their politics don’t fall under a certain umbrella.
