A recent CBS News/YouGov poll revealed some intriguing insights about Republican voters and their stance on former President Trump.
Despite Trump facing indictment charges over classified documents, 80 percent of Republican voters believe he should be able to serve as president again if convicted. On the contrary, only 20 percent think he shouldn’t be allowed to run again.
On Friday, the Justice Department laid bare a 49-page indictment. It accuses Trump and his aide, Waltine Nauta, of hatching a plot to hide boxes filled with classified documents. These concealed materials allegedly include delicate secrets related to national security.
A significant number of Republican voters, precisely 76 percent, view the indictment as a political maneuver. This percentage reflects the widespread sentiment that the allegations against Trump are politically driven.
However, the Republican voter base isn’t wholly in agreement. While a large portion deems the indictment politically motivated, a smaller slice, around 12 percent, views the involved documents as a risk to national security.
An identical portion, another 12 percent, considers the situation as twofold – they see the indictment as both a political play and a national security concern.
Interestingly, the indictment hasn’t drastically affected how most Republican voters view Trump.
A substantial 61 percent reported the indictment won’t change their opinion of him, while 14 percent shared it improved their opinion. The remaining 18 percent reported their changed view “depends” and it is “for the worse.”
The poll also shed light on the standing of Trump in the Republican primary. Trump holds strong support at 61 percent, which is a significant lead of 38 points over his closest competitor, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The poll is reported to be carrying a specific margin of error of 3.3 percent. Finally, it sampled opinions from 1,798 respondents between June 9 and June 10.
