The National Weather Service has issued a tsunami warning following a large earthquake off the coast of Northern California.
The alert, issued at 1:49 p.m. Eastern Time, covers coastal areas from Davenport, California, near Santa Cruz, to just south of Florence, Oregon. A warning means "that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already according," according to NWS, which is urging those in affected areas to "move inland to higher ground."
Fort Bragg and Crescent City could be the first areas impacted, per NWS, which estimates that a tsunami could hit San Francisco as early as 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The warning comes after 7.0 magnitude or higher earthquake was detected in the Pacific Ocean near Eureka, California.
"Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time," NWS notes, warning that the "first wave may not be the largest."
