Consider this your periodic reminder that there's a governor's race taking place right now in Virginia, with Republican Winsome Earle-Sears taking on Democrat Abigail Spanberger to replace Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), who cannot run for reelection. It's still the dog days of summer, so this race has yet to capture much attention nationally; that'll change once August turns into September.
There's another governor's race taking place this year in New Jersey, with Republican Jack Ciattarelli going up against Democrat Mikie Sherrill, who currently serves in the U.S. House of Representatives. Ciattarelli has something that Winsome Earle-Sears does not: an endorsement from Donald Trump. Trump threw his support behind Ciattarelli back in May, but has been radio silent on the Virginia race.

The Virginia Governor's Race Is Going to Be Tough for the GOP
With election day now just three months away, the president was asked Sunday about whether or not he will endorse Earle-Sears, and his response was somewhat noncommittal.
"Yeah, I would. I mean, I would. I think probably she’s got a tough race. She shouldn’t, she shouldn’t have, but because the candidate she’s running against is not very good, but I think she’s got a tough race. But I would, yeah."
The relationship between Trump and Earle-Sears is a frosty one after she urged the Republican Party to "move on" from the president back in 2022. She seemed to change her tune a bit after Trump secured the presidential nomination last summer, telling Virginia talk show host John Fredericks, "I wanted to hear that he has changed."
Here's more of Earle-Sears' thoughts on Trump:
"I just wanted to hear, on a moral level, that that’s what I was looking for as a Christian. I wanted to hear that from a moral standpoint. And then I heard it. I heard him say, after he was shot, ‘God has saved my life, and he has saved my life for a purpose, and I am going to live for him. And I humbly ask for your vote.’ I was like, ‘yes, he’s back.’ And so after that, we were good."
Whether or not that redeemed her in the eyes of Trump is unclear, but it has been reported that there was a White House meeting between the two earlier this year. Trump, based off his Sunday comments, recognizes that the GOP is in serious danger of losing the governorship in Virginia. Earle-Sears has lagged way behind her opponent in both polling and fundraising; Trump wasn't president when Youngkin won in 2021 (although Trump did endorse Youngkin), so he may feel he has more skin in the game with this year's contest.
The president might be also tempted to make a foray into Virginia politics to bolster efforts by his Department of Education to make several public school systems in the Northern Virginia area come into compliance with his ban on allowing biological males to use girls' bathrooms and locker rooms. The school board of one of those school systems, the infamous Loudoun County, voted Monday to fight the administration on the ban.
For now, it looks like it's a "will he or won't he?" waiting game for the Winsome Earle-Sears campaign.
Early in-person voting in Virginia begins September 19.
