Following the news broke on Thursday evening of former President Donald Trump’s indictment related to alleged mishandling of classified documents, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy issued a statement on Twitter condemning the move in no uncertain terms.

Said McCarthy:

Today is indeed a dark day for the United States of America.

It is unconscionable for a President to indict the leading candidate opposing him. Joe Biden kept classified documents for decades.

I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump against this grave injustice. House Republicans will hold this brazen weaponization of power accountable.

Other elected Republicans and well-known conservatives sounded off on the news as well.

DeSantis, More Republicans Respond to Trump Indictment

There were also a slew of Republican presidential primary candidates for 2024 speaking out, most notably, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who noted the stark difference in treatment under the law of Trump vs. Hillary Clinton and Hunter Biden by the Justice Department:

The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society.

We have for years witnessed an uneven application of the law depending upon political affiliation.

Why so zealous in pursuing Trump yet so passive about Hillary or Hunter?

The DeSantis administration will bring accountability to the DOJ, excise political bias and end weaponization once and for all.

But one notable, prominent Republican voice hasn’t been heard from since the news broke: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Certainly, there is no love lost between the former president and the minority leader, but one might expect at least an acknowledgment of this unprecedented circumstance. Yet, just as he did following the indictment secured by Alvin Bragg in New York, McConnell has remained conspicuously quiet on the matter.

In fact, the entire Senate Republican leadership team has remained mum on the matter.

But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., and other members of the Senate Republican leadership team remained noticeably silent.

Presumably, as the matter progresses, McConnell will eventually weigh in on it, but in the meantime, his silence is deafening.
