Though the murder of Iryna Zarutska happened on August 22nd, it took the national media some two weeks to finally highlight it and the recently released video of the crime in their coverage, predictably latching onto the "Republicans pounce and seize" narrative rather than treating concerns from the public over repeat offender crimes with the seriousness they deserve.
North Carolina Democrat so-called leaders also weighed in some 17 days after the crime began receiving national attention, with Gov. Josh Stein (D) proclaiming that these issues will be resolved once we get more officers on the streets.
As we reported, however, left out was that when he was NC's Attorney General, he was on the infamous Task Force for Racial Equity and Criminal Justice that then-Gov. Roy Cooper (D) - who is now a candidate for the U.S. Senate - created in 2020 in the early days of the George Floyd riots. Implemented recommendations from that task force included an emphasis on "solutions" like pre-trial release programs and destigmatizing and decriminalizing homelessness.

And speaking of Cooper, where is he?
In late July, he made his candidacy for the U.S. Senate official, laughably claiming it was never his intention (as a near-40-year career politician) to serve in Washington, D.C., but that he felt called to do so because the middle class allegedly needed rescuing.
Three weeks later, Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, was stabbed to death on Charlotte's light rail as she was leaving her job at a pizzeria, allegedly by a suspect who has a violent criminal and mental health history. Yet we've literally heard nothing from Cooper himself outside of hurt feelings reports and falsehoods from his handlers over GOP Senate candidate Michael Whatley shining the harsh spotlight on his atrocious record on crime-related matters:
Kate Smart, a spokesperson for Cooper’s campaign, called the attack “a heartbreaking, despicable act of evil” and accused Whatley of “lying again because he knows his support for federal policies that cut local and state law enforcement funding is wrong for North Carolina” in a statement.

Aww, bless their hearts. I guess the truth hurts, doesn't it?
I mean, we now have the Trump administration bearing its full weight down on Charlotte amid President Trump's broader crime crackdown agenda in other cities, including in D.C., and yet Cooper has been MIA on this, the biggest issue to emerge for North Carolina since he declared his intentions to run for Senate.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the NRSC do a campaign ad featuring Cooper's face on the side of a milk carton, because that's how out of sight, out of mind, he's been on this issue.
Is he in the bunker in hopes that this issue will eventually blow over? In hiding because he knows Whatley's claims about his record to be true?
Whatever the case may be, Cooper's response - or shameful lack thereof in this instance - is a good indicator of exactly what he'd do if elected to the Senate at the first sign North Carolina needed strong leadership in Congress on an issue that directly impacted NC residents: Tuck tail and run.
