Wednesday, April 9, 2025

Good morning, and welcome to RedState's "Morning Minute" — a brief glimpse at which stories are trending at the moment and a look ahead at what the day may bring. Consider this your one-stop shop for news to kickstart your day.

A Few Thoughts on Social Security

Today on Capitol Hill...

There's a LOT on tap Wednesday on the Hill — over 40 meetings/hearings are set, including one I wrote about earlier this morning:

Facebook Whistleblower Testimony Before Senate Subcommittee on Meta and China Promises to Be Explosive

And here's just a sampling of what else is set for today:

In addition, the House will vote today on the No Rogue Rulings Act in an effort to rein in federal judges, and the Senate will hold votes to confirm Mike Huckabee as Ambassador to Israel and Pete Hoekstra as Ambassador to Canada.

White House What's Up

President Donald Trump is set to meet with racing champions for a photo opp Wednesday afternoon and later sign executive orders. That's what's on his formal schedule. I expect we'll be hearing more from him about the goings on in the world, whether via Truth Social or an impromptu presser — or both.

Full Court Press...

'Twas a busy day in the courts on Tuesday as several significant decisions were handed down:

Decision: Judge Grants Associated Press Injunction Against Trump Admin - but There's a Catch

Expect more today as the cases work their way up the appellate ladder — we're up over 170 cases involving the Trump administration at this point. At least the lawyers are keeping busy...

The House Rules Committee is meeting this morning to prepare the Senate budget plan for a House debate and vote today. There are still a lot of questions as to whether House Republicans will coalesce, but there are whispers that they're getting "within range."

And keep an eye on China. There's a lot of pressure being brought to bear — or dragon, as it were.

I don't know if my brain is any weirder than the average bear's, but as I'm certain I've shared before, it often latches onto songs as a way of processing certain world events. So it is that this morning's earworm comes compliments of the Barenaked Ladies and their hit "One Week." It does rather seem like there's a giant game of Chicken going on between the Trump administration and our number one geopolitical rival: China. And I won't even begin to claim I know how it's all going to shake out. What I do know is that when I've bet against President Trump in the past, I've most always been wrong. So, I'm going to pray for the best and watch this all play out. While humming...
