America's President Donald Trump and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, have signed a historic trade deal, which is being called the U.S. - U.K. Tech Prosperity Deal.

The signing of the actual memorandum of understanding took place early Thursday and was surprisingly brief:

The White House has already sent out a press release describing the purpose of the deal.

The purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding (hereinafter “MOU”) is to enable collaboration towards joint opportunities of mutual interest in strategic science and technology disciplines, including artificial intelligence (AI), civil nuclear, fusion, and quantum technologies.

His Majesty's government has also released a near-identical description.

The agreement describes several "areas of cooperation":

As the world’s leading quantum nations, the Participants are joining forces to seek to ensure the Participants are the first to realize true quantum advantage.  Together, the Participants intend to build powerful quantum machines that transform defense, finance, and healthcare, protect the Participants’ citizens, and create high-skilled jobs.

This is, so far, the major item of agreement between the two governments from President Trump's historic visit to the United Kingdom.

President Trump later talked up the deal during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Starmer.

The president said:

Also just signed a historic technology prosperity deal, one of a kind, to ensure our countries lead the next technological revolution side by side. In fact we just left the business leaders, the biggest in the world, some of them are in this room right now, and that was quite a meeting we had on business, and trade, and technology.

This trip has galvanized $350 billion in deals across many sectors, and we're committed to ensuring that the UK has a secure reliable supply of the best AI hardware and software on earth, and we supply that, and we'll make sure we supply it in quantity to the UK. We also are joining forces on quantum computing and nuclear power, a natural partnership for close allies.

It's an interesting deal, but as is always the case in such things, the devil's in the details, and those details have yet to be worked out. From President Trump's comments, it sounds a lot like we will be giving the United Kingdom a lot of resources; let's hope that it just sounds that way.

Will this rekindle the "Special Relationship" of post-WW2 America and Britain, that relationship that was so apparent in the Reagan-Thatcher years, but that has frayed some since? That remains to be seen.
