NextImg:Watch: Jon Stewart's Cringeworthy Response to Colbert Cancellation Shows Why Late Night Is Failing

The CBS decision to cancel Stephen Colbert's show (ending in 2026) has folks on the left throwing fits.

The main liberal take seems to be that it's President Donald Trump's fault because Colbert was critical of him. So some on the left are speaking out. How stunning and brave.

But it might be hard to find a worse response than the one from Jon Stewart. He said if CBS was afraid [of Trump] and wanted to protect their bottom line, this was his response.

He dances to a Gospel-singing of "Just go f*** yourself!" Not only is it a false take, it's an insulting use of gospel singing, and cringeworthy beyond belief. But this is all they have left.

People who react like this have thrown away any kind of dignity that they may have had, because their heads are so buried in the bubble of bad politics. They've forgotten about being funny. If they wonder why they're losing viewers, it's things like this. Who wants to watch that, and how does it add to anything?

Here's the reality of the decision that they refuse to accept, as my colleague, Joe Cunningham, explained.

The numbers behind Colbert's cancellation are sobering and have been building for years. According to industry reports, The Late Show costs CBS approximately $100 million annually to produce, with Colbert's salary alone reaching $15 million per year. The show employs roughly 200 people, creating significant overhead costs that made sense when late-night television was profitable, but no longer do.

Most damning of all: CBS was reportedly losing $40 million per year on The Late Show, despite it being the #1 rated program in its timeslot. When your most successful show is hemorrhaging that much money, the problem isn't political pressure—it's structural economic collapse.

This financial bleeding wasn't sudden. Industry sources revealed that CBS had approached Colbert before this season, asking for salary cuts, with one source noting that "poverty was pled" during those negotiations. The network had been grappling with these losses for years, not days.

No company will continue to lose $40 million - it's just not sustainable. And how could a one-host show like that cost $100 million annually? That's crazy, the amount of money.

Stewart and others want to claim some kind of censorship. However, he demonstrates he's free to be as stupid as he is here, without anyone trying to stop him.

Frankly, this situation is a lot like why the Democrats are failing at elections. They can blow a ton of money, but they're not offering up what people want to see or hear. There is no actual humor anymore. If they wonder why late night is dying, this is it.
