As RedState previously reported, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) officially announced on Thursday that there would be a special election in November where voters will be asked to vote on "temporarily" suspending the voter-approved independent redistricting commission process in favor of maps drawn by California state lawmakers, where Democrats have a supermajority in the state legislature.
The move, of course, is designed to try and counter the likely 2026 GOP gains under the proposed new Texas maps with a California map that would benefit Democrats.
“We can’t stand back and watch this democracy disappear district by district all across the country,” Newsom, who said nothing when blue states like Illinois and Maryland were heavily gerrymandered by Democrats to preserve/increase their Congressional representation, stated during a rally that appeared to be sparsely attended.
Newsom also appeared before the cameras for interviews to make his case, and while in one instance he appeared to fall for an epic troll regarding a Trump 2028 hat, it was another one that caught the attention of US Attorney Bill Essayli.
In it, Newsom told Fox Los Angeles that the ICE agents who showed up outside of his Thursday event were a "preview" of what was to come at polling places and "in front of voting booths," and that ICE would be sent there by President Trump to "intimidate people":
This prompted a very important question for Newsom from Essayli, who is the United States Attorney for the Central District of California:
Interestingly, Newsom, who has been spending a lot more time on social media in recent weeks along with his kooky press team, did not respond to Essayli's question. But he did respond to a random X user who suggested ICE agents show up at polling places as a way to get Newsom's redistricting ploy to fail:
Undocumented immigrants don’t vote in statewide elections. That precious right is only for U.S. citizens.
Except... that's not exactly what Newsom implied Thursday in that Fox interview, is it?
Yep. Methinks Newsom kinda sorta said the quiet part out loud about illegal immigrants voting in California elections (something that would seem to be backed up by the fact that he and his fellow Democrats staunchly oppose voter ID) and now wants to act like he didn't. Too late.
