NextImg:Update: Wild Twists in Case of Illegal Immigrant Accused of Writing Letter Threatening Trump

Naturally, credible threats to the life of the leader of the free world should be taken very seriously by federal law enforcement officials.

That goes double when it comes to President Donald Trump after he faced two assassination attempts in the summer of 2024, as the GOP nominee for president, with the first one only narrowly missing a direct hit when the bullet grazed Trump's ear. In the other attempt, thankfully, the suspect didn't get a shot off.

As RedState reported Wednesday, an illegal immigrant was arrested by ICE agents earlier this month in Wisconsin after the suspect allegedly mailed a letter to them threatening to assassinate Trump. The man, 54-year-old Ramon Morales Reyes, was accused of writing the letter, which detailed his alleged frustrations with the deportations under Trump, which the letter claimed included family members.

There have been some wild twists on this story since news broke of Reyes' arrest. As it turns out, the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office is investigating to determine if Reyes was actually the victim of a setup involving another man who is awaiting trial in a case where Reyes is said to be the victim:

Late Thursday night, however, Milwaukee County District Attorney Kent Lovern confirmed his office and the Milwaukee Police Department are trying to figure out if Reyes was framed.

Lovern said the investigation is centered on witness intimidation and identity theft.

The revelations from the county's top prosecutor follows an exclusive report first published by CNN Thursday evening, citing law enforcement sources who said Reyes did not write the letter.

The report said the sources believed someone else wrote the letter with the intent of getting Reyes deported because Reyes is a victim in an unrelated assault and robbery case. The sources said the idea was to get Reyes removed from the country before the assault case went to trial.

Handwriting samples were reportedly obtained, and it was determined that Reyes' handwriting didn't match the letter.

While there's been no information released on that "someone else" who is believed to have penned the letter, DHS issued a statement noting that because Reyes is a criminal illegal immigrant with a lengthy record that "he will remain in custody":

“The investigation into the threat is ongoing. Over the course of the investigation, this individual was determined to be in the country illegally and that he had a criminal record. He will remain in custody.”

[...]

“Morales entered the U.S. illegally at least nine times between 1998-2005,” DHS said in its original press release on Reyes’ arrest. “His criminal record includes arrests for felony hit and run, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct with a domestic abuse modifier.”

Reyes' case was in part the subject of an intense interview Friday between White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller and CNN anchor Pamela Brown, where Miller schooled Brown over the use of the term "undocumented migrant" to describe Reyes and others in his situation.

My colleague Rusty Weiss wrote about it, noting that after Brown proclaimed she was trying to have a "good faith" discussion about the case, Miller leveled her, pointing out that, "When we use language that's designed to obscure the truth, that's not good faith. An illegal alien is an illegal alien. They're not an 'undocumented migrant.'"

The investigation into the letter and the alleged plot to frame Reyes is still ongoing.
