NextImg:Truth Bomb: Democrat Strategist Points Finger at Dems on Gerrymandering

Sometimes, even a Democrat can have a sudden attack of honesty.

Democratic strategist Julian Epstein may be one of those Democrats, on one of those occasions. Speaking on Fox News on Saturday, Epstein admitted, on the current gerrymandering debate, that Democrats have engaged in this practice themselves.

This is known as belaboring the obvious.

Democrats are fighting tooth and nail to stop Texas lawmakers' plan to redraw the state's congressional map, but critics, including one prominent member of their own party, say they don't exactly hold the moral high ground.

Democrat legislators have fled the state to avoid votes on redistricting, which is expected to add more Republican seats to Congress for the Lone Star State. They're getting the rock-star treatment as they visit blue states, where several governors have vowed to gerrymander Republicans out of their own Congressional delegations in retaliation for the Texas effort.

However, Democratic strategist Julian Epstein told "Fox News Live" on Saturday that his party is not immune from criticism, as many blue states have already gerrymandered in a way that limits Republican congressional representation.

"No, I think they don’t have the moral authority, and there’s a lot of pearl-clutching going on," he said.

Well, Mr. Epstein is correct. The Democrats have no moral high ground here. A quick look at the district maps in any blue state will tell you that - Maryland to California, Minnesota to New Mexico, some of the blue-state districts are so torturously drawn as to defy belief.

Several blue states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Mexico, have no Republicans in their House delegations. And many feature oddly-drawn districts, seemingly crafted to limit GOP representation.

"The Democrats don’t have clean hands here. You look at states like Massachusetts, New Jersey[…] Illinois, California, and Democrats have effectively gerrymandered Republicans out of existence," Epstein added.

Yup. And now we're doing it to them. Turnabout is fair play, and it's about time the GOP started playing hardball.

Look, the Democrats, given the opportunity, would legislate and redistrict Republicans out of existence. The California model is the one they prefer, a one-party state, spending the residents into penury, with no opposition to speak of due to creative districting. They would do it on a national scale; we have seen Democrat politicians and strategists argue for making the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico states, of stacking the Supreme Court with a new coterie of activist liberals, anything they need to do to gain and hold power, forever.

So, the GOP has had a rush of brains to the head. We're going to do unto them before they can do unto us. Good.

Blue-state governors seem universally determined to make horse's hindquarters out of themselves on this topic. Illinois's Governor Pritzker whines about Texas's redistricting efforts while ignoring, for example, Illinois districts 13 and 17, just to name a couple, which wind around the state like snakes. And California's Gavin Newsom, by the way, seems to have the idea that a state with only one district - like Alaska - can be somehow gerrymandered, which is side-splittingly funny.

So, one Democrat strategist, seemingly a voice crying out in the wilderness, is cautioning Democrat politicians not to get too full of themselves on this matter. Good for him; Julian Epstein, at least on this single issue, seems to have a degree of awareness that's lacking in most Democrats. But when it comes to our district maps, it seems the Republicans have decided, "You know what? We can give as good as we get, so watch out, because we're not playing anymore."

That's a good thing. It's good for the taxpayers. It's good for the republic.
