President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that might finally put to bed the TikTok issue in the United States, preventing a ban of the popular social media site for good.
On Thursday in the Oval Office, Trump signed an EO preserving TikTok for millions of users on the site, preventing another ban while being able to protect America's national security, by bringing the site into compliance with a 2024 law.
That law required the apps' China-based company ByteDance to "divest or face a U.S. ban," per The Hill's report.

"So, this is interesting, I had a very good talk with President Xi," Trump said. "A lot of respect for him. Hopefully, he has a lot of respect for me, too. And we talked about TikTok and other things, but we talked about TikTok and he gave us the go-ahead."
"We have American investors taking it over, running it — highly sophisticated... Oracle is going to play a very big role," he added, before being pressed if he was confident that there were no longer any security concerns.
"Yeah, I am... It's owned by Americans, and very sophisticated Americans — and people that love the country," Trump explained. "Very smart Americans too. So, they don't want anything like that to happen. Small businesses have become very successful because of TikTok... they use it virtually as an advertising tool, and without it, they wouldn't have anything... So, it's a very important thing for small businesses,"
At one point, Vice President J.D. Vance, who Trump put as the lead of a team tasked with getting the issue resolved, said that "The company will be valued around $14B...the most important thing is that it does protect Americans' data security. It ensures TikTok is still accessible, and on this question of the algorithm… what this deal ensures is that... American investors will actually control the algorithm."
"The fundamental thing that we wanted to accomplish is that we wanted to keep TikTok operating, but we also wanted to make sure that we protected Americans' data privacy as required by law, both because it's the right thing to do, but also because it's a legal requirement of the law that was passed last year by Congress," he added.
"This deal really does mean that Americans can use TikTok, but actually use it with more confidence than they had in the past because their data's going to be secure and it's not going to be used as a propaganda weapon against our fellow citizens," Vance continued.

A press release from the White House provided more background on the deal for the popular social media platform and how it ensures national security.
It read, in part:
(A) First, the divestiture removes the TikTok application and certain other applications from the control of a foreign adversary, as defined under the Act, because, among other things, the new joint venture would be based in the United States and less than 20 percent of the joint venture would be owned or controlled by foreign adversary entities or persons.
(B) Second, the divestiture puts the operation of the algorithms and code, as well as content-moderation decisions, under the control of the new joint venture.
(C) Third, the divestiture prohibits the storage of sensitive United States user data in a manner that would place such data under the control of a foreign adversary and requires such data be stored in a cloud environment run by an American company.
(D) Fourth, the divestiture includes intense monitoring of software updates, algorithms, and data flows by the United States' trusted security partners, and it requires all recommendation models, including algorithms, that use United States user data to be retrained and monitored by those trusted security partners.
