President Donald Trump took steps on Thursday to end the massive takeover of crime and homelessness on the streets after Democrat leaders in Blue states have failed to do anything to make our streets safer.

During a signing at the White House, President Trump signed the "ENDING CRIME AND DISORDER ON AMERICA'S STREETS" Executive Order, which aims to restore "public order" to cities and remove homeless individuals from the streets by enforcing no urban camping, urban squatting, and loitering, among others.

"The number of individuals living on the streets in the United States on a single night during the last year of the previous administration -- 274,224 -- was the highest ever recorded," the White House release read. "The overwhelming majority of these individuals are addicted to drugs, have a mental health condition, or both."

"Nearly two-thirds of homeless individuals report having regularly used hard drugs like methamphetamines, cocaine, or opioids in their lifetimes.  An equally large share of homeless individuals reported suffering from mental health conditions," it added. "The Federal Government and the States have spent tens of billions of dollars on failed programs that address homelessness but not its root causes, leaving other citizens vulnerable to public safety threats."

"Shifting homeless individuals into long-term institutional settings for humane treatment through the appropriate use of civil commitment will restore public order," it continued. "Surrendering our cities and citizens to disorder and fear is neither compassionate to the homeless nor other citizens.  My Administration will take a new approach focused on protecting public safety."

One part of the EO essentially said it ends the "housing first" policies of numerous blue states led by failed Democratic leadership in places like California, New York, Oregon, Washington, etc. that "deprioritize accountability" and fails to "promote treatment, recovery, and self-sufficiency; increasing competition among grantees through broadening the applicant pool; and holding grantees to higher standards of effectiveness in reducing homelessness and increasing public safety."

The Daily Caller's Reagan Reese summed up the lengthy order below:

-- the Attorney General will be ordered to "reverse judicial precedents and end consent decrees that limit State and local governments' ability to commit individuals on the streets who are a risk to themselves or others."

-- The AG will work with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and the Secretary of Transportation to "prioritize grants for states and municipalities that enforce prohibitions on open illicit drug use, urban camping and loitering, and urban squatting, and track the location of sex offenders."

-- Funding will be redirected "to ensure that individuals camping on streets and causing public disorder and that are suffering from serious mental illness or addiction are moved into treatment centers, assisted outpatient treatment, or other facilities."

-- The order stops sex offenders who receive homelessness assistance from being housed with children.

-- The order makes sure discretionary grants for substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery are not funding drug injection sites or illicit drug use.

My RedState colleague Jennifer Van Laar recently wrote about Democrat CA Governor Gavin, who has destroyed the once Golden State, allowing crime to run rampant and the homeless to take over parts of the state's great cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Newsom, who famously proclaimed in 2008 as Mayor of San Francisco that he had a 10-year plan to end homelessness in the city, now presides over the state where half of the nation's homeless live. He's repeatedly said that "fixing" homelessness is his number one goal, yet the problem is increasing by every metric: number of people on the streets, deaths of homeless people, violent crimes committed by the homeless, fires started by the homeless, et cetera, et cetera. And, the state can't account for $24 billion in homeless funding.
