California, under Governor Gavin Newsom, remains defiant over the federal government's reinterpretation of Title IX to disallow "transgender girls," better known as boys, to compete in girls' sports. On Tuesday, President Trump took to his Truth Social platform to unleash a blast of pixels at California and Governor Newsom on this matter.
As usual, the president didn't mince words.
The post reads:
California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow “MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.” This week a transitioned Male athlete, at a major event, won “everything,” and is now qualified to compete in the “State Finals” next weekend. As a Male, he was a less than average competitor. As a Female, this transitioned person is practically unbeatable. THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS. Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to. The Governor, himself, said it is “UNFAIR.” I will speak to him today to find out which way he wants to go??? In the meantime I am ordering local authorities, if necessary, to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals. This is a totally ridiculous situation!!!
We've discussed, at length, in detail, and with scientific studies galore, how cruelly unfair this practice is. We've discussed, at length and in detail, how this is an "out" for a mediocre male athlete to suddenly decide to "identify" as a girl and start excelling in a sport that, in a sane world, they wouldn't be allowed to compete in.
But California, as the president notes, is defiant, even though Governor Newsom himself recently observed that the practice was "unfair."
President Trump wields a pretty big stick here. He can withhold federal funding from California schools, although we can expect some judge-shopping on the part of California and the school district in question to gum up the works. As for President Trump's statement about ordering local authorities to now allow the "transitioned person" to compete in state finals, that's unclear; local authorities don't answer to the president. There would have to be some reason for federal intervention in a local issue, and there may well be, in California's refusal to abide by federal regulations.
The funding, though, remains the biggest stick the president has to wield.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has made no bones about having presidential ambitions himself. He's surely aware that, in taking on this issue as he is, he's on the wrong side of another 80-20 issue; maybe more like a 95-5 issue. It's baffling, but the impeccably coiffed governor and presidential hopeful is navigating a perilous course between the Scylla of the "woke" left that is embedded so deeply in California politics and the Charybdis of the American mainstream.
There's no good way out for the governor at this point. He's going to run afoul of one or the other, and he would seem to have cast his lot with the "woke" left. California's policies in this issue remain hideously unfair to the outstanding girls and young women who have worked so hard to excel in a chosen sport, only to see a "transgender" person, a boy, blow past them. However, at least the United States may be spared the leadership of a man who destroyed San Francisco before going on to destroy California.
