NextImg:Trump Says 'It's Possible' U.S. Gets Involved in Israel-Iran Conflict, Is Open to Putin As Mediator

In this episode of "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet"...

As the high-stakes conflict between Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran intensifies, President Donald Trump now says it's "possible" the United States could get militarily involved. Trump also said on Sunday he's open to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin serving as mediator between the Israelis and the radical Islamist mullahs in Tehran.

I'd normally say something like "What could possibly go wrong?" but in this conflict — which has been inevitable since the Islamists overthrew the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, on February 11, 1979 —the ultimate answer to the question is unthinkable.

In an interview with ABC News' Rachel Scott on Sunday, Trump said the United States is not involved in Israel's military strikes against Iran, but "it's possible we could get involved," after reports surfaced that the Jewish state had urged the U.S. to join the effort to destroy Iran's nuclear program, with some experts suggesting that toppling the Islamist regime is also doable.

Trump told ABC he had a lengthy discussion with Putin on Saturday to discuss the conflict, also telling the outlet he would be "open" to Putin's idea to serve as a mediator between Iran and Israel:

I would be open to it. [Putin] is ready. He called me about it. We had a long talk about it. We talked about this more than his situation. This is something I believe is going to get resolved.

While this might not be "Twilight Zone" territory, it is a bit surrealistic in the sense of Vladimir Putin, of all people — who appears to remain hellbent on completely destroying Ukraine as he indiscriminately bombs Ukrainian civilians — serving as a peacemaker. So, yeah — what could possibly go wrong?

Putin attempting to make a secret side deal with Tehran?

Dunno — but I do know that Putin has shown, innumerable times, that it's a fool's game to trust him or believe a word that comes out of his dictator mouth.

Trump also told ABC he gave the Iranians a "60-day ultimatum" to "make a deal," which they failed to meet, and that he would not set a new deadline.

No, there's no deadline. But they are talking. They'd [Iran] like to make a deal. They're talking. They continue to talk. Something like this had to happen because I think even from both sides, but something like this had to happen. They want to talk, and they will be talking.

While Trump sometimes tends to sound a bit more optimistic than situations or events would suggest is realistic, "They want to talk, and they will be talking" doesn't suggest — call me a skeptic — that a truly peaceful outcome is in the offing, particularly given Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who vowed to "destroy" Israel following its attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, was set to travel to Oman on Sunday for another round of nuclear talks with Iranian officials, but following Israel's strikes, Iran called off the meeting.

So, now what?
