NextImg:This Week's Tsunami Scare Proved One Thing - No One Relies On NPR

RUN! SAVE YOURSELVES! Or something.

If the Kamchatka earthquake and resulting “tsunami” proved anything, it proved a couple of things to me. People love to overreact, and NPR was not the “early warning system" for, well, anyone.

I got a “tsunami warning” via my own warning system. My wife. I was told a massive earthquake, in or around Kamchatka, would soon cause a tsunami on the west coast. The tsunami was on its way. She told me when, but I was busy not listening. But my early warning system worked. I was informed. But what about Ma and Pa Kettle? You know, the folks living with dirt floors, with one black and white TV with an antenna duct taped to the wallpaper, one radio straight out of “A Christmas Story, all tuned to NPR. What about them, evil Republicans? Would they be warned and saved?

I live in California, and as the eagle flies (I decided that that ‘crow flies’ is triggering because a group of crows is call a “murder), we are pretty close to Malibu, and we have friends in the “Bu.” My wife was texting a friend. They knew about the tsunami. She continued to "doomscroll"  through the day. I learned, among other things, that Oprah Winfrey wasn’t opening her private road to evacuation. The military was. But not Oprah.

Would the tsunami hit Malibu? Would it wash over Cher and Babs? What about our relatives in Seattle? In Seattle, conservative commentator and author Jason Rantz wrote about his experience:

Well, this is awkward, because just a few days ago, progressives warned us that defunding NPR was akin to lighting the Emergency Broadcast System on fire. They painted apocalyptic scenarios where an earthquake hits and we’re too uninformed to know what to do — because we didn’t fund Morning Edition’s latest interview with a yurt-dwelling, one-legged yoga instructor who identifies as “earth-fluid.”

Democrats whined that pulling the plug on federal support for NPR, filtered through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, would leave rural Americans especially vulnerable. Because apparently, in this condescending worldview, the heartland is full of barefoot rubes whose only connection to emergency alerts is Steve Inskeep.

Seattle's NPR station didn’t write a “story;” it took one off the AP wire and reprinted it. Was there any Ma and Pa Kettle altered to the tsunami via Seattle’s NPR station? No. Everyone knows that the Democrats were lying about NPR’s mythical role in emergency alerts.

What is the role of NPR in early warning? Nothing. Emergency alerts will come via cell phones or social media, or on a color TV, or via blaring sirens. NOAA provided facts, not NPR.

"NPR will save lives and Republicans are going to kill people" was, and remains, a myth.

Here is Rantz's post on X.

Why did I include that post? Because on X, people read the tongue-in-cheek title, not his article, and they were insulting Rantz. Replies like: “I knew about the ‘tsunami’ in Nebraska, you dope" to “Boy, you are dumb, Jason.” They all knew about the tsunami. No one had relied on NPR, even in Nebraska.

And, what about me? Well, I had my “early warning system” lying in bed next to me. My wife kept me informed of everything. I’m no scientist, but I did stay at Holiday Inn once. I knew that the tsunami's energy would dissipate to practically nothing before it hit Malibu, and our friends were safe. Had there been a real emergency – there are no Ma and Pa Kettles relying on NPR.

Rantz ended with this, and I concur:

Turns out, when you cut through the hysteria and smug elitism, you find what conservatives have been saying all along: critical emergency alerts are a function of public safety infrastructure—not a side hustle of the NPR tote bag brigade.

Maybe now we can finally stop pretending the fate of the republic hinges on another episode of “Fresh Air with Terry Gross.”

Here's my warning - but only to clueless Dems. Shut up. You embarrassed yourselves, again.
