If you don't tune into the WNBA, you can count yourself among the vast majority of Americans. The NBA's welfare league has long been a laughingstock, and for good reason. Namely, because it produces some of the worst quality basketball on the planet at any given time.
Just how bad are we talking? This happened during the 2024 WNBA finals.

It's a real mystery why they are paid like a manager at a fast food joint. Yet, amid all that failure, Caitlin Clark has become the singular draw for a league that otherwise wouldn't even be on anyone's radar. So, how have WNBA players reacted to the boost they've been handed (for context, the league is still a fiscal disaster)? By hating Clark with every fiber of their being. That's shown up on the court with flagrant attempts to hurt the league's only superstar, and now it's showing up in the all-star voting.
Despite Clark objectively being one of the best players in the WNBA, she was voted just the 9th-best guard in the league by her peers. In fact, she wasn't even voted the best guard on her team.
In response, sports commentator Colin Cowherd ripped the WNBA for their "pettiness."
As he points out, the no-names who populate the WNBA spent years blaming everyone else for their failures. They insisted that sexism and racism were behind the lack of viewership and fandom. They refused to look in the mirror and consider that they were simply putting a terrible product on the court. Then, Clark shows u,p and they decide they don't like what the golden goose looks like.
COWHERD: There's obviously a racial component here. The WNBA players, they just don't like what the wave looks like. They wanted to fly private. They wanted to be more popular. They wanted a better deal in the CBA, which they'll get. They wanted sold-out arenas. They got it. They just don't, they don't necessarily think it should be this. But again, you can't fight it. You just never know what success looks like.
The reason this stuff resonates in political circles (and why every WNBA article on this site shoots up the trending list) is that it reveals something broader about certain segments of society. Many people see race as such a deciding factor in everything they do that they will literally kneecap themselves if it means keeping up the narrative. WNBA players didn't want a heterosexual white girl from Iowa to become the face of the league (and the only real draw). But she did, and they can't hide the anger and jealousy they feel about that.
It's pathetic, and it's why the WNBA will never become bigger than Clark. Once she's gone, it's back to Spirit Airlines and $50,000 a year salaries.
