NextImg:The 'Global March to Gaza' Tried to March Through Egypt, and Then the Funniest Thing Happened

The "Global March to Gaza" has reached Egypt, and things aren't exactly going as planned. Seeking to pressure Israel to end its blockade of Hamas-controlled Gaza, the activists thought they would make their way to the Rafah Crossing and receive a heroes' welcome. What they didn't seem to consider is that Israel doesn't control the Rafah Crossing.

They also didn't consider that the local Egyptians might not give them the kid glove treatment they receive in Western nations. So when the activists flew into Cairo to join the march eastward, the funniest thing happened.

As they exited the airport, the activists were blocked from leaving the area by Egyptian authorities. Locals then gave the crowd a less-than-warm welcome. When nightfall arrived, things got even worse, with belts and water bottles being used to pelt the crowd.

The fun wasn't over, though. Egyptian authorities then started confiscating passports and carrying out deportations. One flight alone saw 73 activists sent packing on Thursday, with more waiting their turn.

Organizers of the "Global March to Gaza" put out a statement urging the Egyptians to release the activists and return their passports. It goes on to suggest that the two sides have a "shared cause," and thus should work together. The naivete is just off the charts.

Here's the dirty little secret about the Egyptians (and the residents of every other Middle Eastern country). Despite the facade of Arab solidarity they put up, most of them don't actually like the Palestinians. They see them as a selfish, destabilizing demographic that provides nothing but chaos. So while these activists thought they would be lauded in Egypt because of their "shared cause," they should have realized that Cairo is not some left-wing city in Europe. A bunch of pro-Hamas Westerners with savior complexes showing up to "march" was never going to work out very well.
