NextImg:Second Attempted Trump Assassin Sends Lunatic Letter to Judge

You've got to be nuts to take a shot at a presidential candidate, especially when that candidate is a former president, and even more so when he has just survived a previous such attempt. It stands to reason that the Secret Service would be on their toes after the first attempt, right?

But Ryan Routh, on September 15, 2024, was set up in a hedge on a Florida golf course to do just that. Fortunately for President Trump and the country, a sharp-eyed Secret Service agent spotted his sniper's nest and opened fire, prompting Routh to flee. He was later captured and is now facing charges, but he's no less nuts, as a recent letter he has written to presiding Judge Aileen Cannon proves.

Ryan Routh, the accused would-be assassin of President Donald Trump, has written an unusual letter to the judge asking why the death penalty isn’t on the table — and proposing that he be included in a prisoner swap with U.S. adversaries, even suggesting he be sent to freeze in Siberia in exchange for a Ukrainian soldier.

Routh, who also said that he now wants to represent himself at trial, makes the outlandish requests in a letter to U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon who is overseeing the federal criminal case against him. Routh is charged with attempting to assassinate Donald Trump, assaulting a federal officer and multiple firearms violations for the Sept. 15 incident in Florida, the second attempted assassination plot against Trump in a matter of months.

"Why is the death penalty not allowed? At nearly 60, a life of nothingness without love — what is the point? Why is it not all or nothing?" Routh wrote in the letter on the case docket.

There's a lot of craziness in this letter. First, Routh seems determined to prove out the old legal maxim that "A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client," but if this was the only bat-guano nuts thing in this case, well, that would be one thing. But there's a lot more - not only does Routh seemingly demand to know why he can't be executed, but he presents a veritable laundry list of nutty ideas, like exchanging himself to Russia for a Ukrainian soldier, or to Hamas, presumably for an Israeli hostage.

"I had wished for a prisoner swap with Hamas, Iran... or China for Jimmy Lai or one of the 40 others, or to freeze to death in Siberia in exchange for a Ukrainian soldier... so I could die being of some use and save all this court mess."

As I understand proceedings in cases like this, the attempted assassination of a former president/current presidential candidate, that's not really on the table.

Multiple Secret Service Agents Suspended in Connection With Trump Assassination Attempt

Yes, you have to be a little bit nuts to make an attempt like this. In the ongoing saga of Ryan Routh, though, we're seeing more than a little bit crazy. We're seeing full-on daffy. Kookoo for Cocoa Puffs crazy. His nuts-o-meter is off the scale. One might wonder if he's shooting for some kind of insanity or mental impairment plea, but as of this writing, there's been no mention of such an attempt.

Of course, Routh won't be executed, and he won't be sent to Siberia in exchange for a Ukrainian soldier. If he's convicted, and at this juncture, that sure seems likely, he'll be looking at federal prison bars from the wrong side for a long time, and hopefully getting some mental-health treatment while he's in there. He could certainly use it.
