NextImg:Scott Jennings Sounds Off on Elon's Third Party Idea, Numbers From Harry Enten Support His Point

Elon Musk announced over the weekend that he was starting a third party.

I guess that means a reconciliation with President Donald Trump doesn't appear to be happening.

I think the best way to get positive action is by pushing the Republican Party to elect good candidates who don't vote with the Democrats on critical issues. Historically, third parties haven't worked for a host of reasons.

With President Donald Trump, we finally have real border security and an improving economy. We finally have an intelligent foreign policy that puts our interests first. We have good things happening.

Elon Musk Threatens to Create 'America Party' Over BBB Feud, but There Might Be a Deeper Strategy Here

As CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten explained, the numbers weren't looking good for Musk's idea, given the history. Enten thought it made as much sense as "selling sand in the desert."

He said the problem for Elon was the people who, like him, have also supported the GOP, so they already have a party. He also said that Elon was not as popular as Ross Perot, and Perot's effort failed.

Enten estimated that Musk might be able to draw about 4 percent of the vote.

When asked about the history of third-party success in Congressional midterms, Enten didn't hold back, terming it "Horrible. Awful. Terrible, terrible, terrible." Then he recounted the horrible outcomes for those candidates, saying only 24 had succeeded out of about 13,000 since 1970.

Enten's conclusion was the most problematic. With 4 percent, Musk "could spoil it for the GOP," but he probably couldn't prevail.

And that's the real problem here. Elon stood a much better chance within the GOP, working to use his influence to move people, working to get better candidates. Now he stands to be a spoiler, if it even gets that far, that helps the Democrats win, the very people who have been attacking Tesla and who want to lock him up.

Scott Jennings weighed in on this idea. He echoed the thoughts of many — that this will end up helping the Democrats.

"My humble advice to Elon, who I admire very much actually, is that you may be dividing the forces of people who want to save Western civilization to the benefit of the people who don't," he warned.

"I sort of hope everybody puts the band back together the way they had it back in 2024 because when everybody was working together, things worked quite well."
