NextImg:Reporter Responds to Backlash Against His Depraved Comments on Charlie Kirk Assassin's 'Loving' Texts

ABC News reporter Matt Gutman has responded to the huge backlash against him for his depraved, gushing comments about Charlie Kirk assassin's "touching," loving” text messages between the suspected killer and his trans-identifying male boyfriend.

It is almost too disturbing to believe. But as my RedState colleague Bonchie reported on Tuesday, during the network’s coverage of the charges facing Kirk’s suspected killer, Tyler Robinson, Gutman felt the need to share his disturbed take on the text message thread shared by the FBI. In the text messages, Robinson confesses to murdering the Turning Point USA founder on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10 to his trans lover.

GUTMAN: I don't know that we have seen an alleged murder with such specific text messages about the alleged murder weapon, where it was hidden, how it was placed, what was on it, but also, it was very touching in a way that I think many of us didn’t expect. A very intimate portrait into this relationship between the suspect’s roommate and the suspect himself, with him repeatedly calling his roommate, who is transitioning, calling him "my love," and "I want to protect you, my love."

So, it was this duality of someone who the attorney said not only jeopardized the life of Charlie Kirk and the crowd, but was doing it in front of children, which is one of the aggravating circumstances of this case. And then, on the other hand, he was, you know, speaking so lovingly about his partner. So a very interesting and, as Pierre said, riveting press conference.

Gutman later doubled down on those disgusting comments, as Bonchie wrote:

And lest anyone think he misspoke or perhaps went on to regret his framing, the reporter doubled down in a later segment, again claiming the shooter's affection was "touching."

GUTMAN: And then those text messages, and I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a press conference in which we’ve read text messages that are A, so fulsome, so robust, so apparently, allegedly self-incriminating and yet, on the other hand, so touching, right, with the suspect reaching out to his roommate, who was allegedly his boyfriend, who we understand, you know, identified as male at birth, now identifies as female. And the terminology he used, he was trying to protect him. He kept calling him ‘my love.’ ‘My reason for doing this is to protect you,’ you know, but also asking him to delete the messages and not speak to law enforcement. So there’s this, this heartbreaking duality that we’re seeing very tragically playing out here.

The backlash came fast and Swift. So, surprise, surprise, on Wednesday, Gutman released a statement and said he “unequivocally condemned” Kirk’s murder.

“Yesterday I tried to underscore the jarring contrast between this cold-blooded assassination of Charlie Kirk — a man who dedicated his life to public dialogue — and the personal, disturbing texts read aloud by the Utah County Attorney at the press conference,” Gutman wrote in his statement on X.

“I deeply regret that my words did not make that clear,” he added in a second post. “But let there be zero doubt here: I unequivocally condemn this horrific crime and the pain it caused Charlie Kirk’s family, those who were forced to witness it at UVU, and the millions of people he inspired.”

RedState’s Rusty Weiss reported that this is not the first time Gutman has found himself in trouble.

Weiss wrote:

Gutman, meanwhile, has been suspended from ABC twice in the past, once for violating pandemic policies and another time for incorrectly reporting that all four of Kobe Bryant's children died in a helicopter crash in 2020.

At the time of this publication, there has been no public response from ABC News. We will keep you updated if there is. Stay tuned to RedState.
