Everyone who hasn't been living under a flat rock in Patagonia for the last few years knows that Chicago is a mess. Under a series of increasingly incompetent mayors, the Windy City has become a crime-ridden place and, thanks to the "sanctuary" policies in place, a haven for illegal aliens of every variety.
The Trump administration sent Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) in to fix that latter problem. But ICE has been facing some heavy opposition from leftist protestors and agitators. President Trump has mentioned the possibility of sending in more federal officers or even the military to help straighten this mess out.
So, on Saturday, when Illinois Governor JB Pritzker complains that the Trump administration has ordered 300 members of the Illinois National Guard to active duty, one has to wonder if Chicago will be their destination, and what they'll be doing when they get there.
The Trump administration plans to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard, Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker said Saturday.
Pritzker said the guard received word from the Pentagon in the morning that the troops would be called up. He did not specify when or where they would be deployed, but President Donald Trump has long threatened to send troops to Chicago.
“This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will,” Pritzker said in a statement. “It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.”
Except, Mr. Governor, that a major city in your state is completely out of control, crazed lunatics are interfering with and even attacking federal agents who are carrying out their lawful tasks, and your primary job is protecting the liberty and property of the people of Illinois - and you're failing to do that.
If you won't do it, maybe President Trump will. Now, it's not yet clear where these 300 Illinois Guard members are going, but we it would not be in the slightest bit surprising to see them deployed to Chicago.
The governor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for addition (sic) details.
You don't say.
The escalation of federal law enforcement in Illinois follows similar deployments in other parts of the country, including in Baltimore and Memphis. Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles over the summer and as part of his law enforcement takeover in Washington, D.C.
Yes, and the deployments have worked in those areas. Most notably in the nation's capital.
ICE Agents Come Under Large Scale Coordinated Assault in Illinois; One Attacker Wounded by ICE
Here's the thing: ICE's job isn't optional. The repatriation of people who are in the country illegally isn't optional. It's in the law. It's the proper constitutional function of the executive branch of the federal government to enforce immigration laws. It would be better to have the cooperation of state and local governments, but ICE's mission stands with or without that. In Chicago, in Los Angeles, in Portland, in every place where unhinged leftist goons are trying to interfere, the mission stands. ICE is enforcing the law. They'll go on enforcing the law.
And it's working. Many illegal aliens are self-deporting. If they self-deport, they are welcome to return via lawful channels. But if they have to be dragged out and sent back involuntarily, they aren't welcome to set foot in the United States again. That, too, is the law.
It's too bad that President Trump has to activate the National Guard to see this done. But the law is a harsh mistress; Donald Trump ran on this, we voted for this, and the president sure seems determined to get it done, with or without Governor Pritzker's approval.
