NextImg:Poll of Residents Stomps All Over Democrat Narrative About D.C. Crime

Democrats are arguing that crime in Washington, D.C. is not a real "emergency."

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said that. Democrats are now placing themselves in the crazy position of not wanting to do something to help alleviate crime because they hate President Donald Trump.

It's a losing issue. And it's taking positions like this that may explain why their approval is in the basement.

We've outlined a variety of things that have blown up that narrative — from the D.C Police Union saying, yes, there's a real problem, to even MSNBC's Joe Scarborough admitting he knew of Democrats and media who were privately cheering Trump's action.

Dem Narrative on Trump D.C. Action Takes Another Hit With Big Admission on MSNBC

If the Democrats continue down this road, they are flaming themselves in yet another issue where they are on the wrong side instead of with the people.

The findings in a May 2025 poll show how problematic it may be for the Democrats. The Washington Post poll found 50 percent of D.C. residents thought crime was a "very serious or extremely serious problem," according to Axios reporter Alex Thompson.

"Now, some people took a victory lap because that was down from 65 percent the year before," he said, as others on the panel laughed.

"But still, if you have 50 percent of your constituents saying that crime is either very serious or extremely serious, that is a political problem if you want to stay in office,” Thompson asserted.

That might explain why Mayor Muriel Bowser is not going as hard as congressional Democrats against the Trump move. It could be a political suicide for her if she did.

You had people on the panel laughing that anyone would argue "it's not 65 percent, it's only 50." You have Democrats trying to make that kind of an argument here. But frankly, if 50 percent of your public says it's a "very serious or extremely serious problem," then you're not going to buffalo them by pretending it isn't. The poll may be down from its highest number, but that doesn't mean it isn't a serious problem in the eyes of the residents.

That's the bottom line: If you can improve the situation for the residents, why wouldn't you?

Democrats have a habit of being on the wrong side of 80/20 issues, and it looks like they're there again on this issue. Knowing the Democrats, though, they can always find a way to drive their low approval numbers lower.
