President Donald Trump made it clear that any reports that he's planning to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell are simply "not true."
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday from the Oval Office after his meeting with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Trump took a host of questions from reporters, one about reports that Powell was on his way out, because Trump reportedly planned to fire him.
"Is that right? Those are reports?" Trump asked the reporter. "But they are not true."
"You know what you need there [as Fed chair], a smart person with common sense," he added. "I think it's one of the easiest jobs in government... that's why I'm trying to figure out why he wants to expand and add more people? He's going to add more economists to tell him what to do."

"I was right, the economists were all wrong," Trump continued. "They admitted it this morning."
Another reporter also asked the president about reports that Powell was minutes from being fired today, and he replied again that it wasn't true.
"He should've cut interest rates a long time ago. Europe has cut them ten times in the short period of time we cut them, none," Trump replied, noting that the only time they were cut was right before the 2024 election to try to help the Democrats hold on to the White House. "How did that work out? It didn't work out too well."
"I think he does a terrible job," he added. "He's costing us a lot of money. The country has become so successful that it doesn't have a big impact. He's a terrible fed chair. But no… We're not planning on doing anything. We're very concerned."

"He's [Powell] doing a little renovation for $2.5 billion of the Fed (the Federal Reserve building)," Trump continued, turning to his guest to explain. "Building a renovation, and they have close to $9 million in cost overrun on it. And it's a shame. But the biggest cost is the cost overrun for interest rates. Because we should be paying three points lower, and we would save a trillion dollars a year in interest if that were the case."
Trump then pointed out how in eight months he gets to make a change and said that "we'll pick somebody that's good, and we will pick somebody, I just want a fair job. We want to see lower interest rates. Our country deserves it."
During the press conference, Trump referenced Powell's nickname, "Too Late," which he has given to the Fed Chair, who has appeared to be unfazed by the president's criticism over his failure to lower rates.
As my RedState colleague Jennifer Oliver O'Connell reported, the battle of wills between Trump and Powell is something to behold.
Despite rumors swirling that Powell is mulling resignation, from all appearances, he is in for the long haul. But "Art of the Troll," Trump has kept the pressure on "Too Late" Powell, using his words and persuasion tactics to erode the Fed chair's reputation and confidence.
After his return from the FIFA Club World Cup in New Jersey, Trump continued the campaign, telling reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews that Powell has been "very bad for the country."
