NextImg:NYC Mayor Eric Adams Announces Major Change at Infamous Roosevelt Hotel Illegal Immigrant Shelter

For many, New York City’s infamous Roosevelt Hotel perfectly illustrated the illegal immigration problem that former President Joe Biden allowed to explode to unsustainable levels.

Named after former President Teddy Roosevelt, it’s located in a prime location in midtown Manhattan at East 45th Street and Madison Avenue, and it became a symbol of Jazz Age glamor since its construction in 1924. Its ownership has changed hands several times since then, and it has faced stiff competition from newer, more modern hotels.

Despite its famous past, I doubt you’d want to stay there these days, because in 2023 the city started housing illegal aliens in its rooms. Now, embattled Mayor Eric Adams—who called out the illegal immigration crisis to the Biden administration and was promptly served with corruption charges by the Department of Justice in a move that many felt was payback—has announced that it’s time to right the wrong:

The notorious Roosevelt Hotel migrant shelter in Manhattan is expected to close down operations in the coming months, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday as the number of asylum seekers in the city’s care continues to drop since President Trump took office.

Adams, a Democrat, called the impending closure of the centralized intake center and emergency shelter at the beleaguered Midtown hotel a “milestone” for the Big Apple, which has seen more than 232,000 migrants reach the city since the crisis first began in spring 2022.

Hizzoner, in a video message, credited the winding down of operations at the repurposed site to “the successful strategies we put in place here in New York City and because of policies we advocated for at the border.”

Today, we are announcing the Roosevelt Hotel, which served as both our asylum arrival center and the humanitarian emergency response and relief center for nearly two years, will be closing in the coming months, thanks to the successful strategies we put in place here in New York City and because of policies, we advocated for at the border.

Roosevelt Hotel was opened in May 2023 during the height of the crisis, with the city receiving an average of 4,000 arrivals each week. Now, thanks to our policies, we're down to an average of just 350 new arrivals each week. and while we're not done caring for those who came into our care, today marks another milestone in demonstrating the immense progress we have achieved in turning the corner on the unprecedented international humanitarian effort.

Our administration has skillfully managed this crisis, which has seen over 232,000 migrants into our city asking for shelter, and the Roosevelt Hotel has been key in allowing us to effectively manage our operation, processing almost 75 percent of individuals that have come into our care through these doors.

Now, thanks to the sound policy decisions of our team, we are able to announce the closure of this site and help even more asylum seekers take the next steps in their journeys while simultaneously saving taxpayers millions of dollars. With this closure, we are closing 53 sites within a span of a year.

While I applaud Adams for being one of the few Democrats to speak out on the border crisis when it was at its peak, I note two glaring names missing from this speech: Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The former virtually single-handedly created the illegal immigration disaster, while the latter has been busy cleaning it up. Adams says repeatedly that it’s his team’s decisions and policies that have led to them being able to close the Roosevelt, but the reality is that it’s Trump’s new border moves that have slowed the human tsunami to a crawl.

Adams might want to remember that in the future. In the meantime, good riddance to the blight that was the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan.
