NextImg:Not Tired of Winning Yet: Trump Announces Trade Deal With Vietnam

They say you can't win 'em all, but President Donald Trump certainly seems to be racking up a significant number of wins of late.

While we await a final vote in the House on the One Big Beautiful Bill, and while the White House reportedly has been meeting with House Republicans who aren't committed to voting for its passage, the president took to Truth Social to announce that the administration has secured a trade deal with Vietnam.

Less than 20 minutes later, Trump delivered with additional details:

The full post reads:

It is my Great Honor to announce that I have just made a Trade Deal with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after speaking with To Lam, the Highly Respected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. It will be a Great Deal of Cooperation between our two Countries. The Terms are that Vietnam will pay the United States a 20% Tariff on any and all goods sent into our Territory, and a 40% Tariff on any Transshipping. In return, Vietnam will do something that they have never done before, give the United States of America TOTAL ACCESS to their Markets for Trade. In other words, they will “OPEN THEIR MARKET TO THE UNITED STATES,” meaning that, we will be able to sell our product into Vietnam at ZERO Tariff. It is my opinion that the SUV or, as it is sometimes referred to, Large Engine Vehicle, which does so well in the United States, will be a wonderful addition to the various product lines within Vietnam. Dealing with General Secretary To Lam, which I did personally, was an absolute pleasure. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

At first blush, this would appear to be a monumental deal for the U.S., with Vietnam agreeing to pay a 20 percent tariff on goods plus a 40 percent tariff on transshipping and opening its market to the U.S. with zero tariffs.

The deal, as one might expect, also appears beneficial for Vietnam:

Vietnam was previously hit with a 46% tariff as part of Trump’s "Liberation Day" reciprocal tariff announcements.

That tariff was later suspended for 90 days, with the suspension set to expire next week.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said in late June that he was expecting to reach a trade deal with the U.S. before the deadline, according to Reuters.

"I hope that you will see that the result will come earlier than two weeks," Chinh reportedly said. "Vietnam and the U.S. share a deep understanding on tariffs... I hope that all the positive things will come for us."

Some will undoubtedly contend that the devil is in the details, but given the negative guff Trump and the administration received following the "Liberation Day" tariff announcements in early April, in my view, they're entitled to crow about these beneficial trade deals as they come rolling in.

And it's more than fair to expect that they'll continue to come rolling in.
